Fresh Cup (Vol.2): 7 (New) Bands You Have To Hear!

Greetings rock’n’rollers of the world, here we are with another new list of rad bands that I think you should check out. So, please sit back with a cup of coffee and enjoy.

Oenos

First on the list is the one-man project Oenos. Originally from Oulu, Finland, now residing in London, Uk, Oenos draws on their great Nordic roots and exceptional taste in wine, to create some of the best sludgy dark music I’ve heard in a while.

Right on the cusp of Halloween 2020, Oenos dropped  “Musta III”. The record is just shy of 45 minutes but is filled with gorgeous atmospheric Black Metal, Sludge and Prog elements that take the listener on an auditory expedition like no other. Oenos’ music impeccably combines doomy instrumentals and masterful screams that paint a gorgeous gloomy picture that you would exactly expect within the Finnish forests.

AvatariA

Next up is the Dark Metal band from Berlin, Germany, AvatariA – a gnarly metal group that has established a league of their own. AvatariA has spent the last decade masterfully mixing elements from death, black, thrash and gothic metal to make a signature sound of their own that doesn’t shy away from heavy grooves and brutal riffs. With four albums under their belt, it’s only time for this talented German group to take the metal scene by storm.

In October of 2020, AvatariA released their EP “Apocalyptica” which is packed with 20 minutes of epic death metal attributes that are not worth missing. The EP is incredible cultivation of black metal and death metal drawing on similarities to the Behemoth, Rotting Christ and Septicflesh, all the while remaining true to their own sound.

Slim Tin Fox

Taking a break from the heavier groups, next on the list is a high energy rock and roll band from Dublin, Ireland. Slim Tin Fox is a kickass rock band that uses punk rock attitude and classic blues components to create hard-hitting rock’n’roll that captivates the attention of any rock music fan. With only a handful of tracks to listen through on streaming services, Slim Tin Fox leaves you yearning for more of their magnetic gritty sound, they’re a band definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Nidbild

Next on the list is a band that caught my eye through a Spotify cover recommendation. Normally, I’m not the biggest fan of covers, but Nidbild’s cover of Sepultura’s “Refuse / Resist” is a force to be reckoned with. Nidbild takes inspiration from Gothenburg’s (Sweden) death and thrash metal bands such as In Flames, Dark Tranquility, At the Gates, and Insomnium. Therefore It’s no surprise that Nidbild was able to track such a high intensity cover, that I think may even be more brutal and heavy than the original (hot take?).

What was once a solo thrash-metal project of Elliott Berlin (Björn Heden) of Aesthetic Perfection, Combichrist, and Telemark, Nidbild has since turned into a frankenchild production of the “Great lockdown of 2020” resulting in an international expansion.  The band now includes Elliott as frontman and guitarist, Danika Ruohonen of Australian death metal band In Death and Fang on bass, and Yannik Fleming of industrial black metal band Hanzel und Gretyl (USA) and dark alternative band Florian Grey (Germany) on drums

The group is set to release their first full-length album “I Ondska vi Består” in winter 2020-2021 — which is high up on my list of anticipated records.

Nighthawk

Going back to one of my most favourite genres of music, stoner-fuzz-rock, Nighthawk is definitely a band to keep your eye on in regards to that genre. The American trio draws on classic sabbath-esque doomy tones while sprinkling in a more psychedelic vibe to make this perfect dreamy atmosphere.

With only one EP (Structures on The Moon [2020]) in their catalogue so far, Nighthawk still manages to rope in a steady group of listeners that eagerly anticipate new dreamy tunes from the band.

Silver Talon

Next on the list is the American heavy metal group, Silver Talon. Soaring out of the mountains of Portland, Oregon in 2017, the band first introduced themselves to the world two years ago with their first EP “Becoming a Demon” . The EP is packed with riveting heavy metal tracks in the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Helloween. Silver Talon has since released another single, that being their latest track,  “Deceiver, I am” earlier this year. The song showcases their talent as a true metal band rather than a hair metal 2.0, as the track takes their power metal chops and steps into more guttural instrumentals that back the riveting vocals. The song is exciting and fun, much like their first EP.

Coincidence

Last, but not least, is the alternative metal group from the Czech Republic, Coincidence. Coincidence released their debut album “Panta Rhei” back in November of 2020, which includes 12 tracks that fuse elements of thrash and metalcore to create melodic, but heavy, tunes that are nothing short of high energy.
